Reasons Why Kids Tooth Extractions are Necessary
There are a few different scenarios in which a children’s tooth extraction may be necessary:
- Your child’s temporary tooth hasn’t fallen out yet, causing their permanent one to be stuck below the gumline. We can remove the temporary tooth to allow the adult one to grow in.
- Your child needs to undergo orthodontic treatment but there’s not enough room in their mouth to be able to align their teeth.
- Severe dental damage or trauma has caused a tooth to be irreparable.
- Severe dental decay has led to a tooth-compromising infection.
What to Expect During a Children’s Tooth Extraction
Tooth extractions are relatively straight-forward, and our team will take every measure to ensure that your little one remains comfortable throughout the treatment. Sedation dentistry, like oral conscious or nitrous oxide sedation, may be recommended to ensure their visit is fear-free. We’ll also administer a numbing agent to the area that we’ll be treating to make sure they aren’t in pain.
Dr. Murad will gently lift the tooth out of its socket using an instrument called an elevator. She’ll then wiggle it free of any connective tissues using a pair of dental forceps and remove it from the mouth!
Aftercare Tips for Your Little One
After your child’s tooth extraction in Pickering, Dr. Murad and our team will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to help your child make a speedy recovery. These typically include the following:
- Keep your child from using a straw and spitting. If they need to spit, have them use a napkin to do so.
- Have your child maintain a soft diet for the recommended period of time following their procedure, gradually introducing other foods as instructed.
- Ease any swelling by placing an ice pack wrapped in a towel on their mouth for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for up to an hour at a time.
- Have your child take any prescriptions or recommended pain medications as directed.
- Call our office if you have any concerns!
Understanding the Cost of Kids’ Tooth Extractions
The cost of tooth extractions for kids can depend on a few factors. Before we move forward with treatment, we can provide a cost estimate and make sure you understand your payment options. We do not want you to run into any unpleasant surprises when you pay for your little one’s care! Generally speaking, extractions are one of the more affordable restorative treatments. They are also a great value because they open the way for kids to enjoy improved oral health!
Factors That Can Affect Tooth Extraction Cost
The cost of your child’s tooth extraction may be affected by several factors:
- The specific tooth that needs to be removed. Some teeth are more challenging to extract than others, which can lead to additional fees.
- The number of teeth that must be extracted. If your child needs to have more than one tooth removed, that will logically increase the total cost of their care.
- The overall complexity of the case. We can handle many extractions right here in our office. If your child’s case is particularly complex, we might need to refer them to an outside specialist, who will have their own pricing structure and payment policies.
- Additional care. If we sedate your child during their extraction, you can expect that to affect the cost of their procedure. Aftercare, such as the placement of a space maintainer to preserve the spot of a developing adult tooth, may also affect total fees.
Does Dental Insurance Cover Tooth Extractions?
In most cases, yes, dental insurance does cover tooth extractions for kids. Your plan may cover up to 80% of your child’s procedure. (If the extraction is considered surgical in nature, your insurance might cover only 50%.) Our practice welcomes dental insurance. You will pay for your child’s treatment upfront, but once your claim is approved by your insurer, you can expect to receive the appropriate amount of reimbursement.
Other Options for Making Tooth Extractions Affordable
We do not want you to be unduly stressed about paying for your child’s tooth extraction, so please feel free to ask us about financial options. Our team will be happy to explain our pricing structure and answer all your questions.
Remember, delaying care due to concerns about cost can lead to more expensive treatment down the road. It is an economically wise choice to make sure that your child’s procedure gets completed in a timely manner!

Tooth Extractions FAQs
Tooth extractions are important if your child’s tooth is too damaged to save due to decay, infection, an injury, or impaction. Dr. Murad and the Hi Five team will do everything she can to save your child’s tooth if possible, and she will only recommend extraction if necessary. If you have been informed that your child needs a tooth removed, you may have some questions. Here is some more information about tooth extraction to help you better understand this procedure and how it will benefit your child.
Is There an Alternative to a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is always used as a last resort. Thus, if Dr. Murad is recommending your child have teeth removed, it is likely because there is no safe alternative. Tooth extraction may seem like an extreme step, however leaving a damaged, infected, or impacted tooth in place can have dangerous ramifications for your child’s healthy teeth. Thus, to protect their oral health from further damage, they may need to have the affected tooth removed.
What Risks Are Involved with Tooth Extractions?
Tooth extractions are extremely safe procedures, however there are some minor risks involved, including infection. Another common risk is dry socket, a condition which can cause pain and delays in healing when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site comes out prematurely.
Thankfully, lowering your risk of these conditions is easy when you follow the aftercare guidelines presented by Dr. Murad and her team. These easy instructions will teach you best practices for what to eat, when to eat, and how to care for your child’s teeth and extraction site until their stitches have dissolved.
Does Getting a Tooth Extracted Hurt?
Your child may be fearful of pain from a tooth extraction procedure; however, Dr. Murad will ensure that they are properly numbed before she begins. During the extraction itself, your child will not feel any pain or discomfort but may feel some pressure. Once the procedure is complete, they will likely experience some soreness and discomfort, however following the aftercare instructions will help minimize pain and speed up the healing process.
Should your child’s pain get worse, or they lose the clot in their extraction site, contact Dr. Murad’s office as soon as possible for further instructions.
What’s Recovery for Tooth Extractions Like?
For successful recovery from your child’s tooth extraction, be sure to follow the aftercare instructions closely. Ensure that they get plenty of rest, especially in the first 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. Limit their physical activity and be sure to take extra good care of the extraction site. Do not allow them to use a straw or to spit, as this can dislodge the clot and cause dry socket.
Be sure to help them keep their mouth clean to reduce the risk of infection. They can rinse with warm salt water within about three days of the procedure with Dr. Murad’s approval. Additionally, be sure to change their gauze as necessary, keep them on a soft food diet, and allow them to take OTC or prescription pain killers as directed. Your child should start feeling much better by the third day after extraction.
