What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are small, cap-like restorations that our dental laboratory custom-crafts to fit snuggly atop your child’s damaged or treated tooth. Dr. Murad uses dental materials known for their aesthetic appeal, like ceramic, as well as their durability, like silver, so you can choose the option that you feel best fits your child’s needs.
Our team may recommend a customized restoration like a dental crown in the following situations:
- To help strengthen a tooth that has already been treated, like after a filling has been placed.
- When severe dental trauma, like a crack within a tooth, requires a tooth to need extra protection from harmful oral bacteria.
- After a tooth has receive pulp therapy.
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown
Our team does our best to make your child’s treatment as stress-free and fear-less as possible. Dr. Murad will begin by removing a small portion of enamel from the tooth to help the crown fit securely over the top of it. This will also ensure that their bite remains even, and the restoration feels comfortable within their mouth. We’ll then capture an impression of the prepared tooth to send off to our dental laboratory. There, they’ll craft the permanent crown from silver or ceramic. In the meantime, we’ll place a temporary crown atop your child’s tooth.
Once your child’s permanent crown arrives, we’ll have you both come back in to remove the temporary restoration and cement it in place. This is quick and pain-less! Finally, Dr. Murad will remove any residue from the tooth, double-check your child’s bite, and make sure it feels comfortable. It’s likely that they may experience some discomfort for the following 24 hours, but it should go away soon after that.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
If your child’s pediatric dentist recommends that they need a dental crown, know that this isn’t an uncommon procedure and there’s nothing to fear. Our team will walk you through each step of the process beforehand so you know exactly what you’re consenting to. Once the crown is placed, you and your child will be able to breathe easy knowing that their precious tooth will remain protected until it naturally falls out on its own, preventing premature tooth loss that can lead to orthodontic problems in the future.
Dental Crowns FAQs
Are Dental Crowns Permanent?
While a dental crown is not technically permanent, it can be a long-lasting solution that lasts anywhere from five to fifteen years depending on how well it is cared for. The procedure that prepares a tooth to receive a dental crown is irreversible since lost tooth enamel does not grow back, so the treated tooth will need to wear a crown from then on. However, the dental crown will protect the tooth wearing it from further damage and infection, allowing it to last much longer than it would have otherwise. A few great ways to keep your child’s dental crown in great shape are to make sure they practice excellent oral hygiene, attend regular dental checkups and cleanings, wear an athletic mouthguard when playing sports, and wear a nightguard to bed if they grind their teeth.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
The average dental crown lasts somewhere between five and fifteen years, but this depends on the material it is made from and how well it is cared for. While metal crowns may have a longer lifespan than metal-free ones, this difference is often negligible. If you’re looking for ways to help your child’s dental crown last for as long as possible, you can do so by helping them keep up with proper oral hygiene, avoid excessive sugar consumption, and abstain from bad oral habits like nail-biting, teeth grinding, chewing on non-food items, and smoking.
How Do You Know When a Dental Crown Needs to Be Replaced?
While the only way for us to know for sure if your child needs a new dental crown is for Dr. Murad to visually examine or take X-rays of their teeth, there are a few clear warning signs that their appliance is ready to be retired. These include:
- Pain – If your child reports that their crowned tooth hurts after they have recovered from having it placed, it may be because of tooth decay beneath the appliance. In this case, the crown may have to be removed so the infection can be treated, and the appliance may have to be replaced altogether.
- Instability – Contact us if your child’s crown is moving about upon its tooth, as this is probably because the cement holding it in place has degraded.
- Degraded appearance – A dental crown is supposed to beautifully restore a compromised tooth, so chips or stains may be reason enough to replace it.
Do Dental Crowns Get Cavities?
While it is impossible for dental crowns to develop cavities, the teeth wearing them can still get these nasty oral infections. A crowned tooth can be just as likely to become infected as an uncrowned tooth, but poor oral hygiene makes it easy for bacteria and plaque to accumulate along the gumline where the tooth and crown meet. From there, they can travel beneath the crown and begin eating away at your child’s enamel. The best ways for your child to prevent tooth decay while wearing a dental crown are to brush and floss every day, keep up with regular dental checkups and cleanings, and limit their sugar intake.
