Understanding Your Dental Insurance
Dental insurance plans can be confusing, but our team is here to help you make sense of them. Here are a few common terms you should know:
- Deductible: The fixed amount you must pay out-of-pocket each year before your insurance company begins to pay for services.
- Annual Maximum: The maximum dollar amount your plan will pay for your dental care in a benefit year.
- Co-insurance: Your share of the cost for a service, usually represented as a percentage. For example, your plan might cover 80% of fillings, meaning your "co-insurance" or "co-payment" is the remaining 20%.
Coverage Levels: Most plans cover services at different percentages:
- Preventive Care (cleanings, exams, X-rays): Often covered at 80-100%.
- Basic Procedures (fillings, extractions): Often covered at 70-80%.
- Major Procedures (crowns, bridges): Often covered at 50%.
Pre-authorization: For major services like orthodontics, we may submit a "pre-authorization" to your insurance company to find out exactly what they will cover before we begin treatment.
