Why Children Get Cavities
Cavities occur when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that break down tooth enamel. Children are particularly susceptible because their enamel is thinner than adult enamel, their diets often include more sugars and starches, their brushing technique is still developing, and the grooves in their teeth are deeper and harder to clean.
Even with excellent oral hygiene, some children develop cavities due to the natural shape of their teeth, reduced saliva flow, or other factors. When cavities occur, prompt treatment prevents them from growing larger and causing pain or infection.

Our Approach to Fillings
At our Pickering pediatric dental office, we use tooth-colored composite fillings for most restorations. These modern materials bond directly to tooth structure, require less drilling than traditional metal fillings, and match your child's natural tooth color.

Our pediatric dentists are specialists in working with children, using gentle techniques, appropriate anesthesia, and child-friendly communication to ensure comfortable treatment.
We explain procedures in ways children can understand and give them control through choices and breaks when needed.
What to Expect During a Filling
Before starting any filling, we ensure your child is completely comfortable. Depending on the cavity's location and depth, we may use topical numbing gel followed by local anesthesia. Many children don't even feel the numbing injection when proper technique is used.
Once your child is numb, we remove the decayed portion of the tooth using a small dental handpiece. The tooth is then cleaned, conditioned, and filled with tooth-colored composite material. A special light hardens the filling, and we shape and polish it for a natural look and comfortable bite.
Most fillings are completed in a single appointment lasting thirty to sixty minutes, depending on the number and size of cavities being treated.
Caring for Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings require no special care beyond regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. With proper oral hygiene, fillings can last many years. We monitor all restorations at your child's regular appointments and address any concerns promptly.
