If you have an anxious child who needs dental treatment, you should know that there are several options available for their dental care. One option is oral conscious sedation. You may now be wondering- What is oral conscious sedation, when is it used, and what is the process like at HiFive Kids Dental?
What is Oral Conscious Sedation?
Oral conscious sedation refers to method of sedation in which an oral medication is given to the child. Most of the medications used are liquid and may also be referred to as a “juice” drink when explaining the procedure to you or your child. The medication helps relieve anxiety and may also cause a “drowsy” effect to help your child cope with the dental treatment. However, this type of mediation is not meant to put the child to sleep and your child will be awake or “conscious” during the treatment. The sedation medication may also have an amnesia effect which is very helpful for children. Your child will be monitored the entire time during their treatment by our expert pediatric dental specialists. The medication will last in the system throughout the day, even after the treatment is complete and most children recover very well by evening time.
When is Oral Conscious Sedation Used?
Oral conscious sedation is used for children with high level of anxiety, a large of amount of dental work that needs to be completed or when other methods of treatment such as no sedation have failed. Conscious sedation is incredibly safe and can be a very effective way to complete dental treatment for your child.
